A readable path through 391 sourced firmware records—not 391 isolated patch pages.
Storage and downloads moved from fixed hardware to managed libraries
PS4 4.50 made compatible external USB storage a first-class installation target and added PS4 Pro Boost Mode. F13 PS5 03.00.00 later allowed PS5 games to be stored—but not played—from compatible USB extended drives, while PS5 04.00.00 enabled M.2 SSD expansion for playable storage. H703
An archive drive, an expansion drive and a console reset solve different problems. Use the version pages for requirements and Sony’s current instructions before buying hardware or moving data.
Display updates added capabilities, not universal performance
PS4 4.00 announced HDR support across PS4 models alongside folders and a redesigned Quick Menu. PS5 05.50.00 added ALLM controls for compatible televisions, and PS5 06.00.00 added 1440p HDMI output and gamelists. PS5 07.00.00 extended VRR to 1440p. These features depend on the display, connection, model or game; a firmware entry is not a frame-rate guarantee.
Portable media evolved differently: PSP 3.80 added Internet Radio, while PSP 5.00 brought direct PlayStation Store access—valuable history, not proof those old services still operate.
Remote Play and cloud streaming are related, but not the same route
PS4 1.50 launched with supported Remote Play and second-screen features. Vita 1.80 added Cross-Controller. Portal began as a PS5 Remote Play device in 2.0.0; 4.0.0 introduced a cloud-streaming beta, 6.0.0 expanded eligible library streaming, and 7.0.0 added a higher-quality 1080p mode and cloud refinements. The Portal requirements guide separates host-PS5 Remote Play from eligible Premium cloud streaming, including account and country conditions.
Accessibility arrived through many small system changes
Vita 1.80 added button navigation. PS5 03.00.00 expanded Screen Zoom and Trophy controls; 07.00.00 added more accessibility controls alongside social changes. These entries show when capabilities appeared, but do not replace the Access controller guide or establish suitability for an individual setup.
Account security changes can look like broken firmware
PS3 4.89 and Vita 3.74 document the move to device setup passwords and browser-based account management. F05 · F06 · F12 Reinstalling system software does not fix an account-authentication requirement.
Recovery is also version-specific. PS3 4.45 and 4.46 preserve a withdrawal-and-recovery sequence; PS4 and PS5 distinguish a normal update from destructive system-software reinstallation. Always use current official recovery instructions instead of downloading historical firmware from a mirror.
What this history proves—and what it cannot
This guide establishes that a documented feature was associated with a version and, where supported, a release date or availability bound. It does not prove that an old service remains online, every region received a feature simultaneously, every model supports it, or a current problem is caused by that update.
Sharing grew from console features into cross-platform communication
PS4 2.00 introduced Share Play, YouTube sharing, USB music and themes. PS4 7.00 expanded parties to 16 people and widened Remote Play support. On PS5, 03.00.00 enabled cross-generation Share Play and request-to-join sessions; 07.00.00 added Discord voice chat plus new social controls.
Names and menus change. When an old guide says Party, Game Base or Share, anchor it to the console and version before assuming the same route exists today.
