Start with the installed version
For a compatible PS4 version running on PS5, Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance covers DualShock 4 and supported PS4 peripherals. Native PS5 games use PS5-supported controllers. Wheels, sticks and specialist peripherals need their own compatibility check; this is not an every-model list. N10
Pairing to four devices is not universal game support
The July 2025 beta announcement, updated in September for the general rollout, describes multi-device pairing for DualSense and DualSense Edge. Registration does not override a game’s platform, input or software requirements. Follow current device instructions rather than assuming a console update has updated every accessory. N21
Original PS VR has its own accessory route
On PS5, compatible original PS VR software needs the appropriate PS4 camera, adapter and required controllers. The PS5 HD Camera does not substitute for the PS4 camera. PS VR2 is a different software and controller system. N10 · N33
How PlayStation input evolved
The original controller, later analog controls and vibration, and DualSense’s haptics and adaptive triggers reflect changing ways games communicate through the hands. Those historical features are not present in every controller or game. Read the full history for the design context, or the Access reference for configurable alternatives. We have not measured controller latency or durability. H03 · H28 · N31
