A Digital Edition is not always the same hardware situation
The original 2020 PS5 Digital Edition lacks the supported detachable-drive route. Compatible later Digital models can use Sony’s attachable drive, and PS5 Pro can also use a compatible drive. Sony requires an internet connection when pairing that drive with the console. Identify the CFI model rather than concluding from the word “Digital” alone that a disc can never be used. N12 N13 N14
Playing the PS4 version is not the same as claiming a PS5 upgrade
An eligible PS4 game may offer a free, paid or time-limited upgrade. The publisher’s offer decides that; “runs on PS5” does not imply “free native PS5 edition.” For disc-based upgrades, Sony requires the original disc in a drive-equipped PS5 each time the upgraded version is played. The upgrade’s country/region conditions and the account used also matter. Subscription versions do not automatically qualify unless the offer says they do. N11
Saves are another question. Do not assume a save moves because an upgrade exists. The Last of Us Part II Remastered documents import from its PS4 version, whereas Part I’s FAQ says older saves and trophies do not transfer into that remake. A save path needs a specific publisher rule. N37 N34
Older games: identify what is actually being offered
A digitally sold classic can be a particular emulated release. A remake can revisit the same story with a new implementation. A streamed game runs through a service. Neither the familiar title nor the existence of a modern product grants PS5 the ability to read its PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc. Sony’s CFI-2115 manual explicitly excludes those disc formats. Controllers and VR can change the answer
DualShock 4 is supported for compatible PS4 games played on PS5; it is not the standard controller route for native PS5 games. PS VR games also need the appropriate headset and accessories. Original PS VR and PS VR2 are not interchangeable software platforms, and a PS5 HD Camera is not a substitute for the original PS Camera route. N10 N33
